Frequently asked questions…
Is everything that transpires during a counseling session confidential?
As a school counselor, I am bound to the American School Counselor Association Code of Ethics, which holds confidentiality as the most important code. This means that unless the client gives me permission to share what transpired during a session or unless there is possible danger involved, I shall keep the contents of the session confidential. As a counselor, I will communicate openly with the parents as needed and will encourage children to be open with their parents as well.
Can students or parents talk to the counselor about anything?
Yes. As a school counselor, I am here not only to help students, parents or faculty during times of crisis, but to also be here to share times of achievement and success!
How can students or parents take advantage of the more “individualized” services the counseling program as to offer (e.g. individual counseling)?
Students can be referred for group counseling by parents or teachers. They can also come in themselves for individual counseling. Parents are more than welcome to make an appointment to meet with the counselor to discuss concerns about their child. It is my goal to have an open line of communication with the faculty, parents and students.
